Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) voted in favor of S. 47, the Natural Resources Management Act, which includes a number of his signature conservation and sportsmen’s provisions that he has introduced in previous Congresses. Thompson released the below statement following his vote.
“Since coming to Congress, I’ve worked to conserve our nation’s most beautiful natural wonders and ensure they are open to sportsmen and women for generations to come. As a lifelong hunter, angler and advocate for our natural resources, I am honored these provisions are on their way to the President’s desk to be signed into law. They are commonsense measures, proven to productively fund conservation and increase opportunities for hunting, fishing and other recreational opportunities and I was proud to vote in support on the House floor today.”
S. 47 includes more than 100 individual bills to expand conservation activities, including legislation that designates more than 1 million acres of wilderness, protects for more than 1 million acres of public lands, and the establishes the 21st Century Civilian Conservation Corps, a program to increase job training activities for young people on public and tribal lands.
The bill also includes three of Thompson’s signature pieces of conservation legislation, including:
- Permanent reauthorization of the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF),
- Legislation designed to increase access to hunting, fishing and other recreational activities on public lands and,
- Establishment of a program that prioritizes innovative approaches to conservation, invasive species control, and issues related to poaching and trafficking.
