Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) denounced the President’s decision to declare a national emergency and redirect funds from military and law enforcement activities in order to build his wall on our southern border, a signature campaign promise.
“This is not a crisis and the President is trying to redirect funding from critical national security efforts in order to finance a silly and ineffective campaign promise. I’ve long said that the wall is a 7th century solution to a 21st century problem. Declaring a national emergency simply because you couldn’t reach an agreement over the course of negotiations is not how you enact policy and this action threatens the fabric of our constitution. Congress must defend its constitutional authority against this overreach so that we maintain the balance of powers enshrined in our founding documents as a nation.”
