Thompson Responds to Administration’s Rule banning Bump Stocks Calls for full legislative action to ban conversion devices

Washington – Today Gun Violence Prevention Task Force Chairman Mike Thompson (CA-05) responded to the news that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has issued a rule banning both the production and distribution of bump stock devices that turn semi-automatic rifles into fully automatic rifles.

“While this rule banning bump stocks is a welcome development, it is only a first step toward progress. Because it can be easily challenged in court, Congress must pass legislation banning these dangerous devices outright. It’s been more than a year since a gunman opened fire killing 58 in Las Vegas with the aid of a bump stock – yet the Administration has only just taken action and Republican leaders have blocked every Congressional effort. This is just another reminder of the action the new majority will take starting in January to help keep the American people safe from gun violence.”
