Washington – Today, Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-04) released the following statement in recognition of two years since the deadly insurrection against the United States Capitol by supporters of the former president. “Two years ago, our Capitol was assaulted by those seeking to overturn the will of the people. It was a blatantly illegal attempt to subvert our elections and prevent the peaceful transfer of power, which is a cornerstone of our democracy. January 6 was a tragic day in our nation’s history, and it’s one that has never been witnessed before. It is essential that we reflect on the events of that day and the impact they had on our nation, as those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. “It is a testament to the resilience of our democracy that, despite this attack, the will of the people was upheld, and the peaceful transition of power was completed. Our democracy and our Republic are too important, and this attack reminded us just how fragile they can be. “However, the threat to our democracy did not end on January 6. In the two years since the attack, we have seen conspiracy theories and disinformation campaigns aimed at sowing division and undermining the legitimacy of representative government. These efforts pose a significant threat to the stability and integrity of our nation, and it is incumbent upon all of us to work together to counter them. “As we mark the two-year anniversary of this dark day in our nation's history, let us remember the importance of protecting and defending our democracy and our Republic. Protecting our democracy means protecting our nation, and I am committed to ensuring that the will of the people is always upheld.” |
