Washington – Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-04) released the following statement on the President’s address to Congress tonight:

“Tonight, the President failed to deliver on the issues that matter to hardworking Americans. Americans want to know how the President plans to lower the cost of groceries, rent, and health care and make our communities safer. Instead, he announced sweeping, inflationary tariffs that will raise costs for everyday people and avoided responsibility for his unlawful actions.

“Americans want to know that their health care is safe. Yet the President failed to take a stand tonight against House Republicans’ devastating budget bill. Our local physicians, health care providers and staff, and patients back home are facing drastic reductions in care because of these irresponsible cuts. Reducing funding for Medicaid and other healthcare programs will have a domino effect on care for every member of our community.”

Rep. Thompson was selected by Leader Hakeem Jeffries to serve as the designated survivor for the State of the Union. He watched the speech from a secure, undisclosed location off campus. Rep. Thompson's guest, Dr. Amy Herold, the Chief Administrative Office and Chief Medical Officer for the Providence health system in Napa, California, attended in person.
