Davis – Today, Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-04) presented the City of Davis with a $850,000 check for the South Davis Library project. Rep. Thompson secured this funding in the government funding bill that was signed into law on March 9, 2024.
“The South Davis Library will greatly benefit a community that currently does not have access to a library by expanding library services and establishing literacy programs for children and adults,” said Thompson. “I am glad that Davis leaders brought this project to my attention, and I am proud I was able to secure the funding in government funding bills. In addition, this space will help to protect our community from extreme weather by serving as a warming and cooling center and a place to shelter from smoke. I look forward to seeing this project move forward and benefit the entire Davis community.”
We sincerely thank Representative Mike Thompson’s office and the Appropriations Committee for their support of the Walnut Park Library,” said Davis Mayor Josh Chapman. “The new library will be a valuable asset to the South Davis community, providing access, education, entertainment and inspiration to children, families and residents.”
Rep. Thompson was joined by Yolo County Librarian Diana Lopez, Davis Library Branch Manager Scott Love, Supervisor Lucas Frerichs, Supervisor Jim Provenza, Assistant Davis City Manager Kelly Stachowitz, Parks and Community Services Director for City of Davis Deanne Machado, Director of Public Works, Engineering, and Transportation for City of Davis Dianna Jensen, Yolo County Director of General Services Ryan Pistochini, and Yolo County Supervisor Elect Sheila Allen.
The funding secured by Rep. Thompson will help to build a library in South Davis, an economically disadvantaged portion of the city which has experienced significant population growth over the past two decades. The building will also serve as a community center for the impoverished area, providing a facility that would be a warming/cooling center and a place where residents can go for smoke relief during wildfires, and power outages and extreme weather events.
