Washington – Today, Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-04) announced that the City of Davis will receive $24 million in federal funds to install cool pavement technologies and replace roadway underlayment to rehabilitate several portions of roadways across the city.
“As temperatures continue to rise, communities need assistance to invest in new technologies that will help address the impacts of excessive heat,” said Thompson. “Today’s grant, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure law, will provide critical funding to the City of Davis to both fortify its road infrastructure and combat the effects of extreme heat.”
Davis’ “Cool Pavements Project” aims to reduce heat island effects which occur when structures such as roads or buildings absorb and re-emit the sun’s heat, amplifying temperatures in urban areas. Thanks to today’s grant, Davis will expand use of cool and reflective materials to increase safety for residents and reduce impacts of the climate crisis. Funds will also go toward enhancing roadways and enacting various safety improvements to benefit all road users in the area.
“We are very thankful to be awarded this $24 million grant — the largest ever received in the City of Davis history,” said Davis City Manager, Mike Webb. “These funds will go towards the Davis Cool Pavement Project, which addresses the imminent threat of extreme heat through effective changes in pavement, applying the best practices in solar reflective, or ‘cool,’ pavements. This Project will repave 15 different roadway segments in Davis that are failing and help bring them up to current progressive City striping standards, helping us achieve our ambitious goals around climate adaptation, street design and bicycle planning.”
