Washington – Today Gun Violence Prevention Task Force Chairman Mike Thompson (CA-05) lauded the announcement from House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerold Nadler (NY-10) that the committee would hold a hearing entitled “Preventing Gun Violence: A Call to Action” next Wednesday, February 6 at 10am. This is the first hearing on this topic in nearly a decade and since the Democrats retook the majority. A statement from Thompson is below.

“The U.S. House of Representatives is finally taking action to prevent gun violence – our new majority is answering the call of the American people. For six years, our Task Force implored the previous majority to hold hearings and we were denied. This is a new day – we will have a hearing and we will get results. I am deeply grateful to Chairman Nadler for his leadership on this issue. This is just the beginning and I look forward to having a vote on H.R. 8, my Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019, and taking action the American people have been demanding. No longer will Congress be silent on this issue.”

Thompson is the lead author of H.R. 8, a bipartisan bill that expands background checks on all gun sales. The bill currently has 229 cosponsors, including 5 Republicans. You can click here to learn more about H.R. 8.
